Day 14: September 26, 2026 (Glasgow - Basel)

Bild
Glasgow - Basel (by Marta & Lilly) Today our morning started very early. As we got up, we realised that this would be our very last morning in Scotland.  When we walked out of our hotel at 7 am sharp we were all still very tired but not too tired to be able to take in the city one last time. We made our way to Glasgow Central station. On the way we realised that we all had a lot more bags and heavier suitcases than when we arrived, but that’s okay since we bring back a lot of great memories and souvenirs. As we had made it into our train our journey already began and we went from Glasgow directly to London. In London we had to say goodbye to Mirjam, Alex and Sophie since they are going to stay in London for a couple of days.  In the unexpected warm weather, which we (coming from Scotland) were not prepared for we had to change train stations in London, which gave us the ability to walk through London once more. Then we had time to buy some much needed snacks before we made...

Day 13: September 25, 2026 (Fossil Grove)

Bild
Fossil Grove (by Kristin & Valeria) Our last day in Scotland has arrived. We enjoyed one last Scottish breakfast in the hotel and reminisced about the eventful two weeks that are now coming to an end. After some time of trying to figure out the Glasgow buses we arrived at Victoria park where the activity planned for today would take place. Once we got there we found the fossil grove which took us back to the Carboniferous period, 330 million years ago. We witnessed fossils of the oldest trees in Scotland first hand. The fossilized trees were impressive, as were the huge cockroaches and anthropods that lived during that time.  In the park we met some familiar faces; Kristins granny and aunt made a short, but sweet appearance. (Love you guys xxxx - from Kristin).        To continue the day we had a little “pub quiz” in the park regarding the Scotland  knowledge we’ve picked up these last two weeks. It was a moment of realization of how much we truly learn...

Day 12: September 24, 2026 (New Lanark)

Bild
New Lanark (by Julie & Mélia) This morning we started the day with a party. The music was loud, colourful lights everywhere, tired eyes and everything was moving. That was our way down to the lobby in the disco lift. After this exciting start into the day and a very delicious breakfast, we took the train to Lanark. There we walked to the New Lanark mill village, where we had a guided tour that led us through the factory building and learned a lot about Robert Owen. He was the factory owner that introduced many changes for the workers. He had many progressive ideas like reducing working hours, introducing basic education for children and a later start into the work life at the age of 10. He also granted free healthcare for all his workers and a free creche for working mothers. Because of this he is regarded an intellectual father of socialism. After the guided tour we sat into some pods that lead us through the history of Anne McLeod, a little girl who used to work at the factory. ...

Day 11: September 23, 2026 (The History of Glasgow)

Bild
The History of Glasgow (by Angelina & Lhadon) This morning we were able to eat breakfast at the hotel as it was included. We used this opportunity to its fullest as it provided us with energy to walk through Glasgow. We left the hotel in a hurry to look at a Tenement House that was preserved and is now a museum. Tenement Houses are apartments that people rented back in the days in Scotland.  We were able to see the apartment of Miss Agnes Toward. She moved there with her mother and lived in the building for 54 years.  The apartment was rather stylish and clean even though they hadn’t much space. Seeing how it looked back then made it much easier to comprehend how living there must have been.  After the visit, we ate lunch individually.    In the afternoon, three students introduced us  to the Willow Tea Rooms. From there we went to the Gallery of Modern Arts where we again listened tona presentation about the tabacco lords that used to live there. ...

Day 10: September 22, 2026 (Oban - Glencoe - Glasgow)

Oban - Glencoe - Glasgow (by Kaja & Ghizmo) Our wonderous journey from Oban to Glasgow began at 10 am on a rainy day. We travelled in two separate little tour buses, and our tour guide and bus driver Dave was very well informed about Scotland and even wore a kilt. He took us to many interesting places along our journey. We really loved the bus. It was cozy and the bus driver even gave us the choice to play our own music. Through his extroverted manners and witty jokes, he felt more like a friend than a bus driver.  Our first stop was the Castle Stalker on which the last scene of the Monty Python movie “The Holy Grail” was filmed. If you haven’t seen this film, we strongly recommend it. Despite the rainy weather we went outside and took mystical photos through the mysterious mist.   Then we had our lunch break in Glen Coe, a Scottish natural reserve with a rich history. It is the site of an ancient super volcano and a caldera collapse. Our bus driver also told us about th...
